Dedicated to promoting internationalization and embracing diversity, the University of Crete School of Medicine introduces its International Program in Medicine. This initiative is designed to educate students into conscientious and proficient members of the global medical community within an international setting. Delivered in English by internationally recognised faculty members, the program is situated within the vibrant Heraklion campus of the University of Crete. This modern campus hosts the University Hospital, a comprehensive library, sports facilities, student center and all departments of the School of Sciences, fostering a dynamic student community. With a commitment to excellence, the program offers an array of intellectually stimulating and professionally enriching courses, ensuring a cutting-edge medical education.
The primary objectives of the program include:
- Providing a robust knowledge foundation for understanding the pathophysiology of human diseases.
- Cultivating essential skills and competencies necessary for medical practice.
- Offering hands-on training utilizing modern technologies and methodologies in medical practice.
- Fostering an understanding of the scientific and ethical principles underlying medical procedures.
- Instilling the perception of medical practice as a commitment to the patient and to society.
The International Program in Medicine is organised into three distinct study cycles: the basic cycle (1st – 4th semester), the pre-clinical cycle (5th – 8th semester), and the clinical cycle (9th -12th semester, encompassing clinical clerkships).
The basic cycle comprises foundational courses such as anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry, serving as pillars upon which subsequent medical knowledge is built throughout the pre-clinical cycle.
The pre-clinical cycle acts as a crucial bridge between the basic and clinical phases including courses such as pathophysiology, microbiology, pathology, introduction to surgery, introduction to internal medicine, laboratory medicine and more. The clinical cycle encompasses core clinical clerkships in Internal Medicine and Surgery, each spanning 16 weeks (during semesters 9 and 10 respectively), followed by clerkships in various medical specialties in semesters 11 and 12.
Both the basic and pre-clinical cycles are structured into modules lasting 7 weeks each, thereby dividing each academic year into four quarters (two quarters per semester). This modular approach enhances continuity in knowledge acquisition and enables students to focus intensively on their studies.

My personal experience in the University of Crete International Program in Medicine has been beneficial indeed. Surrounded with state-of-the-art research and technologies, small class sizes, and helpful administration and peers, the experience so far can never be better in studying medicine. Pursuing medicine within a beautiful surrounding and basking in the culture also helped me get connected with local medical students to study Greek language and it has been rewarding.
